An Unusual Historical Place in New Jersey
An architect named James V. Lafferty built Lucy the Elephant in 1881. Lucy stands in Margate, New Jersey. Lafferty designed Lucy to be 65 feet tall, 60 feet long, and 18 feet wide. It was made out of wood and pieces of flat tin. Lucy has over 1,000,000 pieces of wood. It is made to look like an Asian elephant. Lucy has tusks, and many people thought Lucy was a boy because only male elephants have tusks. Many people still call Lucy a girl. Lucy is a major tourist attraction. We wish we could go see Lucy. It is such a beautiful and historical place.
